The greatest desire of the human heart is to be loved. Now I cannot quote a famous author or popular survey to support my belief, but I can tell from my own experiences. I see it in myself and I see it in my kids. They would give up so many creature comforts just to have someone treat them as a prince for a day.
Yet today I find myself at McDonalds facing a giant digital screen that allows me to order and pay for my food without ever talking to another human being; without ever making eye contact or sharing a smile.
Oh sure, this fancy piece of equipment probably saved a customer time during today’s lunch rush. It probably saved McDonald’s a little bit in manpower. And there is the added bonus that they will bring your food to you, but I’m still not convinced this is what our society needs.
What we need is to slow down and connect with each other. We need to share a warm smile, a kind word or a friendly touch. I have a friend that lives in Chicago and for many years refused to use an IPass. I finally asked her why and her response was this: “I like those few moments that I get to interact with someone. Maybe they are having a bad day and to know that I can make a difference with a simple smile and kind word is worth the extra time and money.” (not a direct quote!!!)
You see, the more society tries to speed us along, the more we get away from the basic truth of Jesus – LOVE. God not only wants us to fall madly in love with Him, his desire is for us to then turn around a lavish that love on those that are hurting and lost.
So the next time you are tempted to rush through your day, stop and think about John 13:34-35.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
Take time to connect with someone today. Strike up a conversation. Share a smile. Make eye contact. It may take a little more time but the joy and peace that comes from obeying scripture will flood your heart and put a spring in your step!
